Kappa Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honor society, was founded for the following purposes:
  1. To further the interests of mathematics in those schools which place their primary emphasis on the undergraduate programs;
  2. To help the undergraduate realize the important role that mathematics has played in the development of civilization;
  3. To develop an appreciation of the power and beauty possessed by mathematics, due, mainly, to its demand for logical and rigorous modes of thought;
  4. To provide a society for the recognition of outstanding achievement in the study of mathematics at the undergraduate level;
  5. To disseminate the knowledge of mathematics and to familiarize the members with the advances being made in mathematics.

Who may become a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon?
The rules of eligibility for membership in New Mexico Alpha Chapter, KME are as follows:
  • Mathematics course means any course in elementary calculus or any course beyond that level which is acceptable toward a major in mathematics, provided such course carries credit of three hours or more. Upper division courses are mathematics courses numbered 300 or above.
      
  • To comply with the national constitution, students must have completed at least three semesters of college work (this is interpreted to mean at least 45 hours at UNM and/or another college), rank in the upper 35% of students at the student's level at UNM, and be a regularly enrolled student at UNM.
      
  • Undergraduates become eligible in one of the following ways:
    • Completion at UNM of at least three mathematics courses with at least a 3.4 gradepoint on all mathematics courses taken at UNM and at least a 3.0 gradepoint on all course work taken at UNM.
    • Completion at UNM of at least two upper division mathematics courses with at least a 3.0 gradepoint on all mathematics courses taken at UNM and at least a 2.8 gradepoint on all course work taken at UNM.
        
  • Students holding bachelor's degrees from UNM or other colleges become eligible in one of the following ways:
    • If a graduate student in mathematics, completion at UNM of at least two mathematics courses offered for graduate credit in mathematics, with at least a 3.5 gradepoint on all such courses taken at UNM and at least a 3.6 gradepoint on all courses taken at UNM while enrolled in the Graduate School is expected.
    • If a graduate student working on a degree other than the M.A. or Ph.D. in mathematics, completion (while enrolled in the UNM Graduate School) of at least three mathematics courses with at least a 3.4 gradepoint on all such mathematics courses and at least a 3.6 gradepoint on all courses taken at UNM while enrolled in Graduate School in expected.
        
  • Any student not eligible under any of the provisions stated above may be deemed eligible by a majority vote at a regularly called meeting, provided no national constitution rule is violated. UNM faculty members may be elected at the pleasure of the Chapter.
