The National Science Foundation is funding an
MCTP Program (Mentoring through Critical Transition Points)
at the University of New Mexico for the next four years,
May 2012--April 2016.
It builds upon results of our previous
NSF-MCTP Grant 2008-2012.
The goal of this program is to offer opportunities that help
students and professionals in the mathematical sciences be succesful,
while building an engaging, interacting community.
It consists of an integrated approach with a strong education component that is incorporated at all levels.
UNM will offer an intensive mathematics camp each summer geared at
undergraduates from throughout the Southwest, with a week focused on
mathematics teaching during years 2-4.
This will provide students the opportunity to learn important ideas from pure,
applied, and computational mathematics.
Research projects throughout the
following academic year and participation at undergraduate conferences
will give a sense of the
challenges and rewards inherent in all mathematical research.
An outreach component promotes interaction between university and high school students,
and also teaches clear presentation skills.
Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will
study advanced mathematics in a Qualifying Exam Preparation Seminar.
Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will also develop
a Graduate Student Teacher Training Seminar in which they critically
analyze aspects that impact teaching and learning.
This effort is intended to provide an exciting and rich opportunity
to the benefit of all approximately 300 participants expected to be directly involved.
