Event Description:

Abstract:

Using C*-algebraic techniques we derived a noncommutative version of the Kirby torus trick, which provides us with a bridge between controlled topology and linear algebra, building on a question raised by M. Freedman.

In this talk we will outline the procedure we have developed to connect the Kirby torus trick with some objects from noncommutative topology known as Soft Soild Tori and that were studied initially, among others, by G. Elliot, T. Loring, T. Shulman, R. Exel and S. Eilers.

We will then present some lemmas derived using the previously mentioned connections, and if time permits we will outline their applications to the study of the solvability some problems related to local approximation of normal matrix compressions.

Tea, Coffee, Cookies and conversation at 3:00pm in the lounge.
