Event Description:

Charged interfaces involving electrolytes are  common and important in research fields such as electrochemistry, surface and colloid science, materials and biomaterials.

The focus of our research is on the effect of the solution structure near an interface affects the surface chemistry that governs the charge. We show that this structure couples to the surface chemical equilibrium and has a profound effect on the resultant charge at the interface. The reason for the strong solvent-structure effect is in the overwhelming number of solvent molecules in comparison to the ionic species. The local distribution of ions (including the potential-determining ones) in the vicinity of the charged surface will depend on the presence of the solvent and thus affect the chemical charge regulation at the interface.
