Event Description:

Discovered by D. Shechtman in the early 1980s, quasicrystals are materials whose molecular structure is characterized by two properties: aperiodicity (the absence of translation symmetries) and long-range order. The notion of long-range order is often reflected via a suitable inflate-and-subdivide rule, a cut-and-project scheme, or some underlying almost-periodicity. I will talk about some operator-theoretic models of quasicrystals and highlight some of the interesting features that they can exhibit, such as Cantor spectra and anomalous quantum transport.
