Event Description:

Title:
Mathematics and Mission Impact at Sandia

Abstract:
As a national security laboratory, Sandia’s mission is to explore the forefront of technologies to help ensure the security and safety of the United States. In many cases, this mission leads to the need to tackle extreme-scale science and engineering problems that demand large, multidisciplinary teams to make progress. Applied mathematicians and computational scientists are increasing critical members of these teams. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of Sandia including its origins as a national laboratory as well as the broad scope of research that Sandia pursues. Within this context, I will describe, via examples, how applied mathematics and high performance computing are impacting Sandia’s mission. I will conclude with a brief prognostication on technical areas and expertise that may be important to help meet our future challenges.

Tea, Coffee, Cookies and conversation at 3:00pm in the SMLC lounge.
