Title: Extensions of Locally Compact Abelian Groups.
Abstract: In this talk, I'll introduce the duality theory of locally compact abelian groups,
with the intent of exploring various objects in number theory, such as the p-adic numbers and
the adeles. The main point will be to give a new way to reconstruct the real numbers from the
integers and their dual, the circle. I will give suggestions on how one might apply this idea
to number theory, in particular, to reconstructing the adeles from the rationals and their
dual. The talk should be very elementary.
