Algebra for the Electronic Marketplace Ross Miller GE Corporate R&D Box 8 Schenectady, NY 12301-0008 Internet: millerrm@crd.ge.com Phone: 518 387-5213 Fax: 800 308-2676 This talk will explore formal structures that characterize automated mechanisms for exchange using market-generated prices. The goal of such formalization is the development of "smart" market mechanisms that employ algebraic means to optimize and coordinate the allocation of goods to market participants "on the fly." Research results for both centralized and distributed market systems are discussed. Differences from neoclassical views of markets as static surplus-maximizing mechanisms are highlighted.
