"The Computer Classroom Lecture" Bill Pletsch* Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute Arts and Sciences Department 525 Buena Vista SE Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87106 USA E-mail:bpletsch@tvi.cc.nm.us Computer algebra systems have not yet lived up to their promise in the field of mathematics education. In particular, in computer classroom instruction (a class where the instructor and the student each have a computer) progress is still slow. The promise remains. The reasons why the promise has not been achieved and what needs to be done to rectify the situation will be fully explored. An analysis of the situation will show it is a question of capability of the software and technique of the instructor. These themes will be discussed in depth with examples. The relative merits of the top instructional computer algebra systems used in colleges in the United States and how they are currently being used will also be discussed.
