ACA'98

1998 IMACS Conference on Applications of Computer Algebra

Special Session:
Quantum Theory

Session Organizer:

Ladislav Kocbach, Ladislav.Kocbach@fi.uib.no , University of Bergen, Norway

This section is devoted to the applications of symbolic techniques in the fields of physics which are strongly based on quantum physics, as atomic physics, nuclear physics and solid state physics, and possibly some parts of many body theory.

Both in atomic physics and nuclear physics the applications of symbolic techniques may be related to the fact that many of the methods are based on use of nonperturbative expansions in bases which are relatively well known special functions. Evaluations of various coupling schemes can then be based on relying on recurrence relations and similar properties, well suitable for automatic symbolic evaluation, and later use of the results in numerical applications.

Similarly, the quantum physics of angular momentum can be treated analyticaly and many packages are already available and often used.

One of the aspects discussed will most probably be the use of symbolic computation in development of computer codes for numerical calculations.

The above examples are related to the fields of atomic and nuclear physics, where the organizer of the session has been working. It is, however, his hope that researcher from other similar fields, as e.g. solid state physics or quantum optics might find it appropriate to contribute to a stimulating work in this section.
