Spontaneous cavitation in growing elastic membranes

ABSTRACT

Abstract: We demonstrate that cavity formation can be induced in an elastic membrane through growth alone. A pre-existing model of an axisymmetric elastic membrane, whose traditional form precludes spo ntaneous cavitation, is modified by the addition of a non-elastic growth step. We demonstrate that the equilibrium configuration reached after growth and subsequent elastic deformation has a cavity with zero traction at its surface.
