Event Description:

A brief introduction to machine learning with a view toward natural language processing

This will be a foundational talk in machine learning with the goal of developing the machinery of the word2vec model.  We will quickly review the quintessential example of machine learning: linear regression with gradient descent.   We will then formalize a framework for word prediction models, develop the softmax probability distributions and see how softmax is used in word prediction through an explicit, albeit simple, example. Finally, we will see how word2vec embeddings can be inserted into a word prediction model to reduce computational demand and produce vector representations of words that are interesting in and of themselves.
