Event Description:

Title:

 Research program on turbulence modeling and simulation at the UNM Department of Mechanical Engineering

Abstract:

This presentation is an overview of research projects conducted at the UNM ME Department in the area of turbulence modeling and simulation that can benefit from collaboration with faculty and students from the UNM Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Some of the projects to be discussed are

  • modeling of the probability density function of a turbulent flow field with the truncated Gram-Charlier series expansions;
  • data-driven modeling of physical processes that occur in turbulent flows;
  • analysis of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation sensitivity to modeling errors;
  • generation of reference data for model validation using direct numerical simulations (DNS);
  • analysis of uncertainty in DNS data.

Recently discovered fundamental issues associated with RANS-based modeling and DNS will be discussed in the light of how these roadblocks can be turned into stepping stones towards advancing our understanding, description, and prediction of turbulent flows.

Bio:

Dr. Poroseva is an Associate Professor at the UNM Department of Mechanical Engineering. She also has a courtesy appointment at the UNM Department of Mathematics and Statistics and is affiliated with the UNM Centers for Advanced Research Computing and Emerging Energy Technologies. Dr. Poroseva is an associate fellow of AIAA and is a member of the AIAA Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee as well as its Turbulence Model Benchmarking Working Group. She is a member of APS DFD, ASME, and SWE; a honorary member of the Pi Tau Sigma Society, and a guest editor of the ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering. At UNM, she is the faculty advisor for AIAA and SWE student chapters. Her Ph.D. is in fluid and plasma mechanics and M.S. degree is in physics, both from the Novosibirsk State University in Russia. Prior joining UNM, she was affiliated with the Center for Turbulence Research at the Stanford University, Aerospace Engineering Department at the Texas A&M University, the Center for Advanced Power Systems and the School of Computational Science at the Florida State University, and Institutes of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and Thermophysics at the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences.
