Event Description:

In this illustrated presentation, I will introduce the basic concept of symmetry, show how symmetry appears in the created objects of many cultures, especially Islamic, and give a short survey of the tessellation art of the famous Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cor-nelius Escher (1898-1972).

It may become clear why Escher is the favorite artist of many mathematicians, scientists and engineers. A one-page handout will give the audience members an opportunity to analyze the symmetry aspects of several patterns.
