Some announcements regarding the IMACS Conference on Applications of Computer Algebra: Please send in your registration forms even if we are paying your registration fees!!! This information is important for our record keeping. More information, such as maps, local sites, and so forth have been added to both the WWW pages (http://math.unm.edu/aca.html) and the anonymous FTP area (ftp://math.unm.edu/pub/aca). The latter has a file called INDEX detailing the files collected there. These areas will remain active as the conference approaches. The WWW page for the electronic proceedings/preliminary program organized by sessions and the anonymous FTP file talks.txt will keep track of talk titles and speakers. In the next few days, a preliminary conference program will be produced (in PostScript). An announcement will be sent out when the program becomes available. We are trying to organize some group activities for some of the lunch periods and evenings for any who wish to participate. Walks around campus and nearby areas (especially Sandia Crest which has an elevation of 10,378 feet) are under consideration. We will let you know more when the program comes out. If you wished to be removed from further mailings for this conference (but not future conferences), please send a note to aca@math.unm.edu . Registration for the IMACS Conference on Applications of Computer Algebra will take place starting at 8 am, Tuesday, May 16, 1995 on the University of New Mexico campus in the UNM Centennial Lounge (Thompson Gallery) at the north end of the first floor of the Student Union Building (SUB) [the entrance will be to the diagonal right if entering the SUB through the north doors; coming in from the south, you must pass by the dining area on the left, the "Campus Grind", then a couple of tables before coming to the Centennial Lounge]. The Student Union Building is located on the southeast section of campus as sketched below (the Centennial Lounge is marked with an @): |===| stairs +-----|===|---------+ | . --- . stairs ||| plaza . --- | | +---+----\/-+ | | +-- | | /\ +-----+ | | @| | | || Humanities | | | +--+ | | North Building | | | | | (5 floors) +-----+ | | | | SUB | | | | +--- ... +----/\-+ o fountain +---------+ | | +-----------+ Johnson | Johnson +---------+ | | | | Popejoy | | VISITOR | Gym | Field | Hall | | PARKING | | +---------+ | +---+ +---------+---+ | o booth | ---------------------------------+ +----------------------------------------- Redondo Road ---+ +-----------+-------------+ +------+ +-+ +-+ +---------------------- | | Yale Park | construction| parking | | parking ---+ +-----------+-------------+--------------+ +-------------------------- Central Avenue ---+ +----------+ +----------+ +----------+ +----------+ +----------- | | | | | | | | | | Yale Harvard Cornell Stanford Columbia || \/ To the airport Central Avenue is also known as Route 66 of TV fame. This was the main east-west highway used by anyone traveling from the East to California. If you are coming from Hokona Hall (for those staying in the dormitories), walk south from Hokona a dozen feet or so until you reach an east-west sidewalk. Follow the sidewalk west past the Education building (on the left) and the Business School (on the right), and then turn south on the long north-south sidewalk that starts where the east-west sidewalk ends. This will lead to the stairs on the north side of the plaza (see map). The building to the south is the SUB. Now, that was easy, wasn't it? ;-] AIRPORT -> HOTELS A free shuttle is available between the airport and the conference hotels (Hilton Hotel and Fairfield Inn). In theory, the shuttle comes by the airport hourly, but one can simply request it by using one of the courtesy phones in the baggage claim area (these are well marked with the name of the hotel listed). There are shuttles to other Albuquerque hotels as well. DORMITORY ROOMS Those attendees arriving by plane and staying in the dormitories should take a taxi from the airport. The approximate cost is $6-7. Tell the taxi driver that you want to go to Hokona Hall on the University of New Mexico campus. Hokona Hall is located on Campus Boulevard, directly south of the University of New Mexico Hospital on Lomas Boulevard. Hokona Hall consists of two pentagonal "lobes" connected by a short hallway. The dorm rooms will be in the Zuni section of Hokona Hall which is the western lobe. To check in, you will need to go to the lobby in the the central hallway. From the street, ypu will see two blue canopy covered entrances. Go *past* them around the side of the building (in either direction) until you come to a door marked LOBBY. If the door is locked, there is a buzzer you can press to fetch someone to let you in. The rooms will be available Monday night (May 15) through Friday night (May 19). Check-in time is 11 am to 10 pm. If you arrive outside those times, there are phones and instructions for calling someone who will check you in. The standard check-out is by 11 am on Saturday (May 20). If you wish to stay until Sunday, please make arrangements to do this when you check in. If you are arriving before the dorm rooms are available, or leaving after the dorm rooms are no longer available, you will need to arrange for a hotel room for those times. There was a mistake on the dorm prices. Each room is $23. Thus, if you are in a room by yourself, the cost will be $23 per night. If you share a room, then the price will be $11.50 per night. Should this mistake cause you any difficulty, please contact Professor Steinberg. The dorm occupants should plan on purchasing breakfast and dinner at one of the many restaurants on Central Avenue. These are very near the meeting site. PARKING There is a visitor parking lot southeast of the Student Union Building (see map). The cost is $3/day. If you are staying in the dorms, you can obtain daily passes there for $1.50/day. There is also scattered free parking in the streets south of campus, however, you must avoid posted areas that require a parking permit. WEATHER (averages for May in Albuquerque) Temperature: minimum 51 F (10.6 C) mean 67 F (19.4 C) maximum 80 F (26.7 C) Rainfall: 0.67 inches (1.7 cm) Humidity: 25% Winds: 7 days of 0-10 mph ( 0-16.1 km/hr) 19 days of 11-20 mph (17.7-32.2 km/hr) 4 days of 21-30 mph (33.9-48.4 km/hr) MISCELLANEOUS It is always easy to know what direction you face when outside in Albuquerque as the Sandia Mountains are on the east side. There will be further information about the conference (and campus maps) available in the dorms and the conference hotels. There will be a van shuttling between the Hilton/Fairfield and the SUB in the mornings and the afternoons. The van will start leaving the hotels on Tuesday around 7:30 am (because registration starts at 8 am). We will provide further information as we make it up!
