Summer Math Camp -- Field Trips
In between the 2nd and 3rd minicourse we take a mid-camp break from work
and visit some of the national laboratories and institutes in New Mexico,
and visit some of our beautiful state.
Below are the shedules for the current and previous years.

Some of the participating students' comments:
"I really enjoyed visiting the Santa Fe Institute.
It has got to be the most relaxing job environment I've seen!"
"I like the talks both about graduate school and careers in the math
field."
" The different presentations given were both
interesting and well-presented.
Going for a short walk on the paths around
the facility was a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the visit."
"The field trip to Los Alamos National Lab was very insightful! We had the chance to Q&A
some of the undergraduate and graduate students who are doing research there. This gave
us an idea of what kind of experience is being shared there. "
"The day at SFI was just great all around. Every speaker presented interesting work
clearly, and the variety of topics among just those three emphasizes what exciting kinds
of work a good mathematician can do."
"The biggest thing I
learned from the experience was that there is virtually limitless potential when it comes
to interdisciplinary research; given any field from physics to linguistics, there is some
sort of math that can advance it. "
"the
trips exceeded my expectations. We met mathematicians and scientists who loved their
work and wanted to share it with us. [...] On this trip I heard from people applying these abstractions to huge
problems like energy and disease. It was a reminder of my original motivations for
studying math, and an invitation to begin applying my talents to real problems.
"
"I greatly enjoyed hearing the valuable opinions of the graduate
students at the Los Alamos National Labs. I
also loved being able to explore the Santa Fe institute and
see the relaxed and more casual atmosphere that some of
the greatest minds in the world are provided to work under. "
" Both institutions place a large emphasis on collaboration between researchers
with very different areas of expertise in order to solve complex problems."
"Talking with the graduate students at LANL was great. I think
it will prove to be the most useful information I got from this experience.
The talks at SFI were really interesting and fun to attend. The 2
visits gave me the impression that SFI was a lot more 'laid back'
than LANL.
Having seen both I now know I'd
prefer a more laid back workplace (one where they have a cat walking around!)."
"The trip was a fantastic experience. The panel of graduate students was immensely
valuable and changed my outlook on how to apply to graduate school. The presentation on Applied Math was an excellent introduction into
what applied mathematicians doe, the vast number of
opportunities out there, and some of the skills that are needed.
The Santa Fe
Institute was also eye opening in that the fields discussed were somewhat surprising and
intriguing."
"At LANL: Specifically, the need for communication across
disciplines was stressed. This point was reiterated by the
nice folks at the Santa Fe Institute, a place where blurring
the lines between disciplines is commonplace and encouraged.
The talks at the Institute were a fine display of what we stand
to gain by approaching big questions from many directions (not
to mention they were just plain cool)."
