Participants for the MCTP Summer Math Camp at UNM, July 5- August 3, 2012, students and Instructors. Here are the student participants:

Kenny Anglin - University of New Mexico

Anglin Hello all, My name is Kenny Anglin. In May, I finished my BS in applied math and a minor in physics here at UNM. I will be starting the UNM applied math graduate program next semester, as well as starting a TAship. I'm eagerly awaiting the fascinating education that lies ahead. Outside of school, I enjoy recreational music making, playing board/card games, watching movies and leisurely hiking around the nearby mountains. It's been great reading your introductions. It seems we have quite an exceptional group of math enthusiasts. See you all soon!

Austin Antoniou - University of Arizona
Antoniou Hello all! I am majoring in mathematics with a minor in linguistics at the University of Arizona, where I will begin my junior year in the fall. I enjoy every minute of my studies, both in and out of my classes and I hope to spend my life doing research in some area within pure math. I haven't pinned down one topic I love more than the rest, but I hope to be closer to doing so by the end of my undergraduate years. As for my time off from studying, I prefer to spend it on my other passion: consuming and creating music. I look forward to meeting you all on the 4th. Until then, have a good week!

Gabe Arrillaga - University of New Mexico

Arrillaga Hey everyone, I’m Gabe Arrillaga, a senior Math major and CS minor at UNM. Eventually I’ll go back to school and get a PhD – being a professor sounds like an awesome gig – but until then, I intend to get rich with a software start-up and spend most of the year coding remotely as I bounce from country to country. Various destinations in Southeast Asia and South America are at the top of the list. When not stressing about homework, I like to read, weightlift, run, and dance. I often fantasize about leaving it all behind and making a break for the wilderness. Sometimes I actually do this.

Sam Bonin - University of New Mexico

Bonin Hi Everyone! I just graduated from UNM with a BS in Applied Mathematics and a minor in Astrophysics, and I'm taking the year off from studying to work and apply to grad school.  I'm using the next couple of months to figure out exactly what science I want to focus on, since my research interests run the gamut from mathematical modelling in physics to the study of life in the universe.  I'm also an avid reader of critical essays, current events, and both fiction and nonfiction literature.  I love to argue, since I think it's one of the surest ways of learning something new.  Outdoors, I enjoy bouldering and downhill skateboarding. PS: I went ahead and created a facebook group entitled "UNM MCTP 2012 Summer Math Camp".

Jackie Cromer - University of New Mexico

Cromer My name is Jacqueline Cromer, but please call me Jackie! I love playing video games, swimming, reading manga, drinking tea, and watching anime. I graduated from UNM in the Spring with a Pure Math degree and a Statistics minor. I live in the beautiful state of Colorado.

Danny Dauwe - University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

Dauwe Hey guys I am Danny, I live in Monument Colorado (just North of Colorado Springs). I am an undergraduate senior student at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, double majoring in Computer Engineering and Applied Mathematics. I have not yet decided where I want my academic career to take me after graduation, I will either change my educational life to the acquisition of more practical knowledge (read, “getting a job”) or more likely let my academics continue on through graduate school, but in either case I look forward wholeheartedly to going wherever my undergraduate foundation of mathematics (and engineering) takes me, and continuing to learn where ever that happens to be.
I love cooking (I'll bring a couple batches of cookies for the BBQ, it will be awesome). I also have a pretty serious love for Chipotle Mexican Grill. On December 6, 2011 the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico had the benefit of opening a Chipotle, so if any of you have not had the pleasure of trying it yet you may rest assured that I will be unashamedly trying to bring you there every time I go to enjoy a burrito. While we are on the subject of food I'll mention that I am also a pretty big fan of different types of teas, chocolates, and micro brews.
I enjoy running very much (and I look forward to running new routs around the city and out near Sandia). I also enjoy pool (I heard that UNM has a pool hall cleverly titled “CueNM” which I am looking forward to seeing), ping-pong, and attending to live music performances.
I am greatly looking forward to meeting with all of you on the 4th, and exploring applications of math with you for the Summer!

Jeremy Dove - Colorado State University

Dove Hey guys, My name is Jeremy and I am a junior at Colorado State University in Fort Collins (originally from Colorado Springs). I am currently working towards an electrical engineering degree with a math minor. I'm hoping to use this camp to explore some different mathematical applications and subject areas to potentially expand upon my math minor with a double major. I enjoy both the mathematician mindset (how and why) as well as the engineering mindset (shut up, don't ask questions and plug in the formula) so I am looking forward to getting a break from my EE coursework that I have been busy with for the first part of summer to focus on mathematics now. Outside of school, I am a CSU math tutor and a big fan of huffing wildfire smoke... Not really, but it seems like that's been my past-time this summer. On the occasions when the air is breathable and the mountains aren't on fire, I love playing ultimate frisbee, hiking, skiing, ping ponging and exploring new places in general. I am also heavily involved in promoting for Rhymesayers Entertainment, an independent rap record label, and I consider the hip hop culture, art, and music to be a big part of my life, second only to me being a student. I am excited to start broadening my mathematical horizons and spending time with you guys in Alba- however it's spelled.  Looking forward to meeting you all and learning how to spell your cities' names!

Tim Dukes - University of New Mexico

Dukes Hi y'all! I am Tim Dukes, a senior at UNM. I study math and computer science. Academically, I want to be involved in the math part of the world of computer science. For fun and art, I like to make electronic music and generative computer graphics. I think those fields can borrow ideas from almost every type of applied math. In my free time I like to read stuff, criticize stuff, play Scrabble, and skateboard on stuff.

Stav Gold - University of New Mexico

Gold Hi, everyone! I'm going into my junior year at UNM; the paperwork has yet to get to the College of A&S, but I am at least in spirit a double major math/physics student. My academic interests are currently in geophysics (and due to its direct applicability to my work I'm really looking forward to the fluid dynamics unit), but since I have a slight background in computational chemistry, quantum mechanics still has a firm place in my heart. Outside of the classroom, I sing in an a cappella chorus called The 505, write poetry on occasion, beatbox, and play Magic: The Gathering, a card game that has cheerfully eaten my disposable income since I was twelve. This is going to be so great--looking forward to meeting all of you!

Craig Hatch- University of New Mexico

Hatch Hey all, I am a math major/psychology minor at UNM and will be starting up my senior year this fall. With only a year left I'm trying to take as much math as I can and have been enjoying the pure side of mathematics. I am also hoping to apply to grad school at some point. Apart from school I enjoy playing ultimate frisbee and going rock climbing. See you on the 4th!

Spencer Ledoux - Northern Arizona University

LeDoux My name is Spencer LeDoux. I am a Mathematics Major and a Senior at Northern Arizona University. I love learning about, thinking about, and talking about math. My hobbies include running, reading all kinds of technical nonfiction, an interest in programming, and playing the piano. Right now I am working on finishing my degree, which should be done next May, and afterward either I will get a job and work for a while to save money for grad school, or I will go to grad school. I want to focus on the application/technological side of math. I am looking forward to meeting all of you!

Jose Martinez - Northern Arizona University

Martinez I am Jose Martinez from Arizona, and currently attending Northern Arizona University where I am a senior studying Mathematics. After completing my bachelor's degree I plan to attend graduate school (to continue studying Math). My interests besides math include music, reading fiction, and watching films.

Melanie Martinez - University of New Mexico

Melanie Martinez My name is Melanie Martinez and I am a senior in UNM Pure Math department. My minor is Japanese. I have had a passion for math since early college and wanted to learn more about it. I am looking forward to what different topics that we will go over. In my spare time, I am active with swimming, hiking, and martial arts.

Audrey Padilla - University of New Mexico

Padilla Hey Everyone, My name is Audrey Marie Padilla, I am a proud graduate of CNM, and a Pure Math major/English Minor here at UNM. I am a native New Mexican who loves getting up early, working in my garden, hiking, taking road trips, eating good food, spending time with friends and family, and learning-always learning. I believe we should learn about as many subjects as possible-we must not allow ourselves to be compartmentalized! I am looking forward to working at CAPS this fall, where I am a writing tutor. I will graduate in 2013; then...only time will tell! So many possibilities...

Stephen Pietromonaco - University of New Mexico

Pietromonaco Hey Guys,  My name is Stephen Pietromonaco, I'm going into my senior year at the University of New Mexico.  I am a double major in pure mathematics and physics.  I really can't see myself ever choosing math or physics and scrapping the other so I would love to study theoretical physics somewhere in grad school.  But...graduation is still a ways off; I have quite a few more physics classes to take so I'm hoping to take some graduate classes in the math department in the mean time.  Outside of school, hockey is one of my passions.  I think I've been playing since I was 8 of 10 or so but ultimately ended up choosing school over hockey after high school.  A great choice in hindsight!   Looking forward to meeting you all next week.  See you on the 4th.

Keith Sanders - New Mexico Technical University

Sanders Hi People! My name is Keith Sanders. I am currently a Junior majoring in Mathematics and Physics at New Mexico Tech. I came to school as a physics major. But my interests tend to gravitate towards Mathematics more than Physics because I've been able to take basically as many math classes as I want to, while I've been restricted to one physics class per semester. My future goals are a little hazy but I certainly plan on attending graduate school. When I am not toiling away at school assignments, I enjoy playing PING PONG! I would go so far as to say I am a fanatic. I also enjoy watching sports and making music. I play the guitar, bass, drums and piano. Keith Sanders

Amy Thompson - University of New Mexico

Thompson Hello Everyone! My name is Amy Thompson. I am a student at UNM; this fall I will be a senior, pursuing a double major in Applied Mathematics and Linguistics. I am looking forward to this fun-filled learning experience with fellow math enthusiasts. I hope to have a greater understanding of what my particular interests in the field of mathematics will be at the end of this MATH CAMP! Outside of academics, I enjoy spending time with friends and family; I am newly an Aunt again to my second niece... with another niece/nephew on the way! I enjoy reading and so volunteer for the local library system. I am also a licensed massage therapist; giving massages helps to keep me grounded and in touch with the physicality of life. Till the fun begins!

Ciarra Villa - New Mexico State University

Villa Heya! My name is Ciarra Villa and I am currently a senior at New Mexico State University. I am double majoring in Applied Mathematics and Electrical Engineering. I plan to continue onto grad school and eventually get my masters. I also hope to sometime get a degree in Computer Science. Either way, Mathematics has been and will continue to be a major role in my life. I am a well rounded person and have interest in just about everything. On my free time, I enjoy drawing, painting, playing video games, reading, sports, and outdoor activities. Aside from school and everything else, I train heavily in Judo.  I am ecstatic to be meeting all of you in this world of knowledge!

Reed Young - University of New Mexico

Young Hi,I'm Reed Young.  I'm scheduled to graduate from UNM in December with a major in Applied Math and minor in Physics.  I'd like to tell you what I plan to do after I graduate but to tell you that, I'd have to (a) know what I'm going to do after I graduate OR (b) make stuff up Since (a) is impossible and (b) is objectionable, I'll have to just skip that.  My interests include climate science & policy, finance & risk (especially as related to climate science & policy), and most recently, biomedical modeling.  Well, that's all the practical math-related stuff that interests me the most right now.  The one remaining item on my bucket list is to fully understand String Theory and know whether it's correct.  I'm not sure one lifetime is enough, but whatever I end up doing for a living, that will be my hobby. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Here are the instructors:

Daniel Appelo- University of New Mexico

Appelo Dear et al.  my name is Daniel Appelo and I have just started (last August) as a faculty member in the Math. & Stat. department. In my research I try to find fast and accurate ways to solve engineering problems using computers. I have worked on numerical methods for problems arising in seismology, fluid dynamics, electromagnetics & more recently in polymer physics.  On my spare time I enjoy the outdoors of NM (and currently the surroundings of Los Angeles) on one of my bicycles. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Monika Nitsche- University of New Mexico

Nitsche Hi Everybody, my name is Monika Nitsche. I've been a faculty member in the Math & Stats department at UNM since 1999. I work in computational fluid dynamics, with emphasis on using and finding as necessary numerical methods to better understand vortex flows. Can't wait to tell you about them! I also study fluids recreationally, in the incompressible regime, at rather high Reynolds numbers of at most 2x10^6 for the large scales (Q: how fast do I swim??). I am originally from Venezuela and speak Spanish and German (try me!), have two wonderful kids (true burquen~as!) and am very much looking forward to meet you all!

Deborah Sulsky- University of New Mexico

Sulsky My name is Deborah Sulsky. I am a professor in the UNM's Math and Stat Department - and have been since 1987. I have worked on applications of mathematics to biology (embryology and ecology) and will be helping Professor Wearing with the last topic of the camp - modeling the spread of infectious diseases. I also work on numerical methods for problems in (continuum) mechanics. My current projects involve modeling the Arctic sea ice (for forecasting and climate simulations), modeling tiny MEMS (micro-electo-mechanical) switches (to improve reliability) and modeling fracture in rock and concrete. I don't have any photos of me on my bicycle, or playing racquetball - my favorite pastimes. In fact, I was looking for a current picture, but can't find one. I just realized the one on my webpage has the wrong hair color! So, I'll have to send one later. Unfortunately, I will miss seeing you at the BBQ on July 4 since I will be in Brazil for the first two weeks of July at a conference in Sao Paulo (tough work, but someone has to do it) and visiting Foz do Iguacu. I look forward to meeting all of you when I get back, and working with you during Math Camp.

Janet Vassilev- University of New Mexico

Vassilev Hello! This is Janet Vassilev, the resident commutative algebraist in the math department here at UNM. The main focus of my research these days is classifying closure operations on commutative rings and determining the underlying algebraic structure that certain sets of closure operations satisfy.
I have been at UNM since 2008 and in addition to my research I have been the co-director of the UNM-PNM State Math Contest, which has been a great opportunity to meet some of the strong high school math students in the state.
Almost every summer I go to Bulgaria with my husband and two daughters. While there, we enjoy traveling around Bulgaria and to other European countries. I love to sample the tasty cuisine wherever we go. At home, I am the pastry chef, making many tasty and savory treats.
We are going to have a great time learning about algebraic structures and closure operations through some games. You will have to try some of my brownies next week at the BBQ. See you there.

Peter Vorobieff- University of New Mexico

Vorobieff According to my biographic sketch posted on Caltech site (they can't be wrong, can they..?): Peter Vorobieff has an M.S. degree in applied mathematics from Moscow University (Russia, not Idaho) and a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University (Pennsylvania). Before joining the ranks of the academia at The University of New Mexico, he has worked in a variety of places - from Russian Association of Space Explorers to Los Alamos National Laboratory (not to mention odd jobs as a newspaper columnist, construction worker, bouncer, etc.). His primary research interests lie in the area of fundamental hydrodynamic instability studies.

Helen Wearing- University of New Mexico

Wearing Dear all, I'm Helen Wearing and I've been on the faculty at UNM since 2007, with a joint appointment in the departments of Mathematics & Statistics and Biology. In my research I use mathematical models to understand the processes that influence population dynamics, with a particular focus on the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases. Although you can usually find me with pen and paper or behind a computer screen, I've been known to venture into the lab and field (under close supervision). I'm originally from Britain and speak French - yes, that's not a contradiction! I enjoy being outdoors, mainly hiking and gardening, some cycling but at a more sedate pace than Dr. Appelo. I also enjoy great food and company, so looking forward to meeting you all next week. See you soon.
