Tyler Underwood - Baylor University
|
Hello everyone,
My name is Tyler Underwood. I am a rising junior and am pursuing a bachelor
of science in pure mathematics at Baylor University. I have lived in Waco,
Texas for the past 7 years and have also lived in Dallas, Houston, and
Tampa, Florida. While growing up, math was always my favorite subject and
the field that I most excelled at. Once I learned that mathematics was a
viable undergraduate major, there was no question that math was what I
wanted to study. Upon graduation, I want to continue my studies in math in
pursuit of a Ph.D. Apart from math I enjoy playing basketball, reading, and
traveling. The attached picture comes from my recent trip to Uganda.

Miranda Mundt - University of New Mexico |
Hey there!
My name is Miranda Mundt. I am soon to be a junior at University of New
Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. I am currently pursuing my bachelor's in Applied
Mathematics and hope to graduate in Fall 2014. My family has a long,
extended background in math, with every one of my father's immediate family
members in some sort of applied mathematics position, either at a laboratory
or a university. When I came of age, I decided to follow suit, and it was
the best decision I have ever made. At UNM, I am a math tutor at the Center
for Academic Program Support (and a former college algebra teacher's
assistant). I plan to pursue a Master's in Applied Mathematics after
finishing up my bachelor's degree.

Matt Gietl - University of Arizona
|
Hey all,
I'm Matt Gietl, a rising sophomore pursuing a degree in Mathematics at the
University of Arizona, and I'm focusing on the pure mathematics track. I
grew up in Batavia, a suburb of Chicago, and as previously mentioned, home
of Fermilab. I had always been fairly good at math but my passion for it was
truly sparked while going to high school at the Illinois Math and Science
Academy. I hope to pursue a PhD after graduating and hopefully work in some
sort of math research after that. Outside of math, I'm fond of reading, I'm
currently working through the A Song of Ice and Fire series which Game of
Thrones is based on. I also enjoy some sports, games, and getting to know
people, which I'm excited to be doing with all of you in a couple of weeks!
Also, In the picture I'm sending, I'm the oldest looking one.

Taylor Klotz -
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs |
Howdies everyone!
I am Taylor Klotz, but most people know me as TK. I just graduated from the
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs with a B.S. in applied math,
emphasis in physics. I will be starting my PhD in pure mathematics in the
fall at CU Boulder! I am super interested in the overlap of pure mathematics
(topology and geometry), physics, and applied mathematics techniques. My
passion for math started in high school after I failed algebra 1 (say what)
but thanks to a hydrodynamics book of my grandfather's I got super
interested in applied math and by the time I graduated I already had a
DiffEq course!
Aside from mathematics, I try to do little bit of a lot of things. These
days I'm doing some archery (traditional recurve), hiking, starcraft, and
miniature painting!
I am so excited to meet all of you! UCCS is pretty tiny for math and not
many people are truly excited about mathematics there, so I am happy to meet
similarly minded math-y people!

Dakarai McCoy - University of New Mexico |
Hello Everbody!!
My name Is Dakarai McCoy and I'm a student in the Electrical and Computer
Engineering Department at UNM. I'm currently a rising Sophomore pursuing a
Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering. I'm excited to begin the
camp this summer mainly because I'm looking for ways to apply mathematics
for my own endeavors. I feel this camp will provide the means to begin that
research I wish to do related to Music. I'm excited to study more and more
math as I know it is an amazing tool. Having the ability to turn a
theoretical situation into mathematics and then to deduce a conclusion which
can then be turned back into words with a physical meaning, is quite the
process. I'm excited to learn the ways with you all.
I've attached a picture of myself posing with the Thing from the comi-con
event. The guy had a pretty good costume made of cardboard.

Anthony Heitzinger - University of New Mexico
|
My name is Anthony Heitzinger, and I am a rising Senior at UNM. While I am
probably not as passionate towards mathematics as the other participants, I
have always been good at it and enjoyed learning it. I am better at
calculating algorithms than most people, and I am quicker at understanding
concepts. To me, there is probably nothing more satisfying than that moment
when a new math concept finally clicks in my mind after some grueling hours
in the classroom and at home. Being able to solve the related problems after
that feels great, and is a large reason I am still learning math. I am an
applied math major. In my free time I enjoy Tennis, board games, video
games, and youtube.

David Weirich- University of New Mexico
|
Good morning Mathematicians!
I'm David Weirich and I am a graduate student here at UNM. I've been
asked to help out this summer. I got my bachelor's degree in 2009 from
Virginia Wesleyan College before moving to Albuquerque. My research area
is harmonic analysis which is a sub-field of analysis born out of studying
Fourier series, but grown up to be about all sorts of other cool things.
I am also a former participant of the MCTP summer camp.
Attached is a picture of me from a conference I was at in the Czech
Republic recently. As you can see were were doing some serious
mathematics.
|
|
Malik Barrett- University of New Mexico

Here are the instructors:
|
|
Jens Lorenz- University of New Mexico
|
Dear All! My name is Jens Lorenz, Prof. of Applied
Math. I got my Ph.D. in Muenster, Germany, and came
to the US in 1983. After 7 years at Caltech, I joined
UNM in 1990. I work on problems in applied analysis,
mostly PDEs applied to physics. I am now the oldest
non-retired faculty member in our department, but just
learned this one: I'm not old, I'm chronologically
gifted.
|
|
Monika Nitsche- University of New Mexico
|
Hi Everybody, I am Monika Nitsche. I've been a faculty member in
the Math & Stats department at UNM since 1999. I work in
computational fluid dynamics, with emphasis on using and
finding numerical methods to better understand
vortex flows. Can't wait to tell you about them! I love
to swim, and hike, and hang out with my family.
Here is a picture of me in England,
trying to be as brave in the cold and rain as the British.
Unfortunately I have a commitment during the beginning of the camp
that I couldn't get out of and won't be back until after it starts,
but I'll be on email (as you'll find out).
Am very much looking forward to meet you all!

|
|
Anna Skripka- University of New Mexico
|
Hi! My name is Anna Skripka. I joined the department of Math & Stats
at UNM last August. Before that, I worked in Florida and Texas, did my
PhD in Missouri, and an undergraduate degree in Ukraine.
Researchwise, I do analysis of linear operators (e.g., matrices), with
some applications to mathematical physics. There is lots of mystery
and challenge caused by noncommutativity of objects involved.
I am also fond of mountains, desert, and birds. Sandia Mountains are,
unfortunately, closed now, but we will have fun solving problems in
class. See you next week!

|
Peter Vorobieff- University of New Mexico
|
According to my biographic sketch posted on Caltech site (they can't
be wrong, can they..?):
Peter Vorobieff has an M.S. degree in applied mathematics from Moscow
University (Russia, not Idaho) and a Ph.D. degree in mechanical
engineering from Lehigh University (Pennsylvania). Before joining the
ranks of the academia at The University of New Mexico, he has worked
in a variety of places - from Russian Association of Space Explorers
to Los Alamos National Laboratory (not to mention odd jobs as a
newspaper columnist, construction worker, bouncer, etc.). His primary
research interests lie in the area of fundamental hydrodynamic
instability studies.

|
Maxim Zinchenko- University of New Mexico
|
Hello everyone, my name is Maxim Zinchenko and I'm a faculty at the
UNM mathematics and statistics department. I'm originally from Ukraine
where I got my undergraduate degree in applied mathematics. I went to
a grad school in Missouri and studied pure mathematics. I joined the
UNM last year and before that I worked in California, Michigan, and
Florida. My area of research is analysis and, in particular, spectral
theory of linear operators. This is a branch of pure mathematics that
has roots in physics and in some sense is an extension of linear
algebra and calculus to infinite dimensions. In my spare time I like
to enjoy the great southwestern outdoors.
Looking forward to seeing you all next week.
