Tyler Underwood - Baylor University

Tyler Hello everyone, My name is Tyler Underwood. I am a rising junior and am pursuing a bachelor of science in pure mathematics at Baylor University. I have lived in Waco, Texas for the past 7 years and have also lived in Dallas, Houston, and Tampa, Florida. While growing up, math was always my favorite subject and the field that I most excelled at. Once I learned that mathematics was a viable undergraduate major, there was no question that math was what I wanted to study. Upon graduation, I want to continue my studies in math in pursuit of a Ph.D. Apart from math I enjoy playing basketball, reading, and traveling. The attached picture comes from my recent trip to Uganda.

Miranda Mundt - University of New Mexico
Miranda Hey there! My name is Miranda Mundt. I am soon to be a junior at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. I am currently pursuing my bachelor's in Applied Mathematics and hope to graduate in Fall 2014. My family has a long, extended background in math, with every one of my father's immediate family members in some sort of applied mathematics position, either at a laboratory or a university. When I came of age, I decided to follow suit, and it was the best decision I have ever made. At UNM, I am a math tutor at the Center for Academic Program Support (and a former college algebra teacher's assistant). I plan to pursue a Master's in Applied Mathematics after finishing up my bachelor's degree.

Tessa Smithers - University of Colorado at Boulder

Tessa Hi, My name is Tessa Smithers and I am majoring in mathematics at CU Boulder. I am originally from Batavia, Illinois (home of Fermilab) but have been in Colorado for a few years now. My father majored in mathematics and always taught me math as a kid. I have loved it ever since. When I am not studying math, I like to hike, travel, and read science fiction. This is my first summer program and I am really excited about it. I can't wait to meet everyone!

Scott Guernsey - University of New Mexico

Scott My name is Scott Guernsey and I am an applied mathematics undergraduate student at The University of New Mexico (UNM). My prospective graduation date is Spring 2014. I have been awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Economics (2010) and a Masters of Business Administration -- Finance (2012) both from UNM. My plan is to apply for doctoral programs in mathematical finance this fall with the hopes of being admitted for the Fall 2014 semester. I am really excited to participate in the math camp this summer and look forward to  meeting all of you! The picture is one of me at Sandia Peak.

Sarah Black - University of New Mexico

Sarah My name is Sarah Black. I am a senior pursuing my bachelors of science in applied mathematics at the University of New Mexico. I've lived in Albuquerque my whole life and hope to one day travel a little. I first knew I liked math when I was in high school, and after attempting a degree in architecture I knew math was what I wanted to study. I will be the first in my family to graduate college and hopefully grad school. I am also a math tutor at the Center for Academic Program Support at UNM. In my free time I enjoy reading, golfing, dancing, and relaxing with friends.

Matt Gietl - University of Arizona

Matt Hey all, I'm Matt Gietl, a rising sophomore pursuing a degree in Mathematics at the University of Arizona, and I'm focusing on the pure mathematics track. I grew up in Batavia, a suburb of Chicago, and as previously mentioned, home of Fermilab. I had always been fairly good at math but my passion for it was truly sparked while going to high school at the Illinois Math and Science Academy. I hope to pursue a PhD after graduating and hopefully work in some sort of math research after that. Outside of math, I'm fond of reading, I'm currently working through the A Song of Ice and Fire series which Game of Thrones is based on. I also enjoy some sports, games, and getting to know people, which I'm excited to be doing with all of you in a couple of weeks! Also, In the picture I'm sending, I'm the oldest looking one.

Taylor Klotz - University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

Taylor Howdies everyone! I am Taylor Klotz, but most people know me as TK. I just graduated from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs with a B.S. in applied math, emphasis in physics. I will be starting my PhD in pure mathematics in the fall at CU Boulder! I am super interested in the overlap of pure mathematics (topology and geometry), physics, and applied mathematics techniques. My passion for math started in high school after I failed algebra 1 (say what) but thanks to a hydrodynamics book of my grandfather's I got super interested in applied math and by the time I graduated I already had a DiffEq course! Aside from mathematics, I try to do little bit of a lot of things. These days I'm doing some archery (traditional recurve), hiking, starcraft, and miniature painting!
I am so excited to meet all of you! UCCS is pretty tiny for math and not many people are truly excited about mathematics there, so I am happy to meet similarly minded math-y people!

Dakarai McCoy - University of New Mexico

Dakarai Hello Everbody!! My name Is Dakarai McCoy and I'm a student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UNM. I'm currently a rising Sophomore pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering. I'm excited to begin the camp this summer mainly because I'm looking for ways to apply mathematics for my own endeavors. I feel this camp will provide the means to begin that research I wish to do related to Music.  I'm excited to study more and more math as I know it is an amazing tool.  Having the ability to turn a theoretical situation into mathematics and then to deduce a conclusion which can then be turned back into words with a physical meaning, is quite the process.  I'm excited to learn the ways with you all.
I've attached a picture of myself posing with the Thing from the comi-con event.  The guy had a pretty good costume made of cardboard.

Anthony Heitzinger - University of New Mexico

Anthony My name is Anthony Heitzinger, and I am a rising Senior at UNM. While I am probably not as passionate towards mathematics as the other participants, I have always been good at it and enjoyed learning it. I am better at calculating algorithms than most people, and I am quicker at understanding concepts. To me, there is probably nothing more satisfying than that moment when a new math concept finally clicks in my mind after some grueling hours in the classroom and at home. Being able to solve the related problems after that feels great, and is a large reason I am still learning math. I am an applied math major.  In my free time I enjoy Tennis, board games, video games, and youtube.

Mehron Arasteh- Western New Mexico University

Mehron Hey all, My name is Mehron Arasteh, I will be starting my senior year at WNMU this fall where I am currently studying applied mathematics with a minor in chemistry. Both of my parents are math teachers so it always came pretty naturally to me and I also enjoy it, so it was an easy pick of what to study. In my free time I like to play video games, snowboard, ultimate frisbee, and of course just hang out with friends.

Axel Haaker- University of New Mexico

Axel Hi everybody, My name is Axel and I am about to begin what ought to be my final semester at UNM as an undergraduate. I am currently pursuing a B.Sci. with dual majors in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics. After completing my degree I hope to continue my studies in engineering and maths, as opportunities arise. Specifically my scholastic interests include fluids and thermodynamics, materials science, mechatronics, and numerical methods. In my free time I enjoy road cycling, hiking, backpacking, and various other outdoor activities. I look forward to meeting you all, and am excited for camp to begin.
PS: Enjoy the attached "deer in the headlights" photo

Joseph DeAguero- University of New Mexico

Joseph Hello everyone, My name is Joseph DeAguero. I just graduated from the University of New Mexico with a BS in Applied Math. I plan to go to grad school in either Applied Math or Computational Biology. I am still deciding what I want to pursue. I enjoy listening to music, watching movies, spending time with family, and playing basketball.

Michael Apers- University of New Mexico

Michael Hello everyone, My name is Michael Apers, and I am a junior at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. I am pursuing a double major in applied mathematics and physics. I have done well with and enjoyed mathematics my whole life, so I knew that I wanted to study it, and the wonder I feel in studying the world has made it clear that I also want to study physics. I hope to one day obtain two masters degrees and a PhD in at least one of my fields if not both. In my free time I enjoy video gaming, rock climbing, and having philosophical conversations with friends. Looking forward to meeting you all soon.

Yuridia Leyva- University of New Mexico

Yuridia Hello, fellow Summer Math Campers!!! My name is Yuridia Leyva , and I recently graduated from the University of New Mexico with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics, a B.A. in Chemistry, and a minor in World Dance. I have loved math ever since my parents and I can remember—math homework was always the first thing I did after getting home from school. Ultimately, I wish to pursue a career in which I can apply both my skills in mathematics as well as my interests in the health sciences. My next step is graduate school, which I’m very excited about! Aside from academics, I love to dance to practically anything, although my favorites are Latin dance and ballroom dance. I also enjoy hiking, being outdoors, and exercising (so if you need a work out buddy, do not hesitate to let me know)! I look forward to meeting all of you!

Before I started at NAU I spent a couple years at Coconino Community College. I just got married last Saturday to the coolest girl in the whole world. When I'm not studying math and physics or getting married I enjoy reading interesting books, cooking (and eating) delicious food, and exploring northern Arizona's beautiful wilderness areas. Anyways, I'm super stoked for math camp.

Daniel Bak- University of New Mexico

Daniel Hello, my name is Daniel Bak. I am going into my 3rd year at UNM as a pure math major. I also work at CAPS (on campus tutoring service) as a math tutor. I really enjoy solving math problems and riddles, and the topics in math that I probably enjoy the most are in discrete mathematics. I am planning on going to graduate school to continue studying mathematics after I graduate.

Patrick Doherty- University of New Mexico

Patrick Hi Everyone,  My name is Patrick and hopefully I will be receiving my B.S in Math from UNM next May. I hope to get at least a Masters in math, and then try to find a job either in industry or education. I also work at CAPS (Center for Academic Program Support ) here at the University. In my free time I like to play chess, read, watch movies, and play the banjo.

Andrew Baxter- University of New Mexico

Andrew My name is Andrew Baxter and I am a pure math and geology double major at UNM. My academic goal is to get a Ph.D in math and work in either planetary science or math academia while giving back to my community as much as possible. My interest and hobbies include logic puzzels, science fiction writing, rock hounding and artisan food.

Taylor Dupuy- University of New Mexico

Taylor Hi Everybody! My name is Taylor Dupuy and I'm going to be helping out a bit with some of the activities. I just finished my PhD and my research is in Arithmetic Geometry (this is the study of algebraic varieties over arbitrary rings). I really like all kinds of math so feel free to chat with me or email me with whatever you feel like talking about. I also like to play racquetball, so if any of you want to play racquetball while you are here we can do that too.

David Weirich- University of New Mexico

David Good morning Mathematicians! I'm David Weirich and I am a graduate student here at UNM. I've been asked to help out this summer. I got my bachelor's degree in 2009 from Virginia Wesleyan College before moving to Albuquerque. My research area is harmonic analysis which is a sub-field of analysis born out of studying Fourier series, but grown up to be about all sorts of other cool things. I am also a former participant of the MCTP summer camp. Attached is a picture of me from a conference I was at in the Czech Republic recently. As you can see were were doing some serious mathematics.

Malik Barrett- University of New Mexico

Malik Howdy! I'm Malik Barrett, currently a grad student at UNM in the mathematics dept. It's looking like my research area will be in Arithmetic Geometry, because geometry is even better when there's algebra/arithmetic involved! I'm into science, adventure, games and everything in between, and am usually up for doing whatever.

Here are the instructors:

Jens Lorenz- University of New Mexico

Lorenz Dear All! My name is Jens Lorenz, Prof. of Applied Math. I got my Ph.D. in Muenster, Germany, and came to the US in 1983. After 7 years at Caltech, I joined UNM in 1990. I work on problems in applied analysis, mostly PDEs applied to physics. I am now the oldest non-retired faculty member in our department, but just learned this one: I'm not old, I'm chronologically gifted.

Monika Nitsche- University of New Mexico

Nitsche Hi Everybody, I am Monika Nitsche. I've been a faculty member in the Math & Stats department at UNM since 1999. I work in computational fluid dynamics, with emphasis on using and finding numerical methods to better understand vortex flows. Can't wait to tell you about them! I love to swim, and hike, and hang out with my family. Here is a picture of me in England, trying to be as brave in the cold and rain as the British. Unfortunately I have a commitment during the beginning of the camp that I couldn't get out of and won't be back until after it starts, but I'll be on email (as you'll find out). Am very much looking forward to meet you all!

Anna Skripka- University of New Mexico

Skripka Hi! My name is Anna Skripka. I joined the department of Math & Stats at UNM last August. Before that, I worked in Florida and Texas, did my PhD in Missouri, and an undergraduate degree in Ukraine. Researchwise, I do analysis of linear operators (e.g., matrices), with some applications to mathematical physics. There is lots of mystery and challenge caused by noncommutativity of objects involved. I am also fond of mountains, desert, and birds. Sandia Mountains are, unfortunately, closed now, but we will have fun solving problems in class. See you next week!

Peter Vorobieff- University of New Mexico

Vorobieff According to my biographic sketch posted on Caltech site (they can't be wrong, can they..?): Peter Vorobieff has an M.S. degree in applied mathematics from Moscow University (Russia, not Idaho) and a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University (Pennsylvania). Before joining the ranks of the academia at The University of New Mexico, he has worked in a variety of places - from Russian Association of Space Explorers to Los Alamos National Laboratory (not to mention odd jobs as a newspaper columnist, construction worker, bouncer, etc.). His primary research interests lie in the area of fundamental hydrodynamic instability studies.

Maxim Zinchenko- University of New Mexico

Zinchenko Hello everyone, my name is Maxim Zinchenko and I'm a faculty at the UNM mathematics and statistics department. I'm originally from Ukraine where I got my undergraduate degree in applied mathematics. I went to a grad school in Missouri and studied pure mathematics. I joined the UNM last year and before that I worked in California, Michigan, and Florida. My area of research is analysis and, in particular, spectral theory of linear operators. This is a branch of pure mathematics that has roots in physics and in some sense is an extension of linear algebra and calculus to infinite dimensions. In my spare time I like to enjoy the great southwestern outdoors. Looking forward to seeing you all next week.
