Anthony Heitzinger - University of New Mexico
|
My name is Anthony Heitzinger, and I am a rising Senior at UNM. While I am
probably not as passionate towards mathematics as the other participants, I
have always been good at it and enjoyed learning it. I am better at
calculating algorithms than most people, and I am quicker at understanding
concepts. To me, there is probably nothing more satisfying than that moment
when a new math concept finally clicks in my mind after some grueling hours
in the classroom and at home. Being able to solve the related problems after
that feels great, and is a large reason I am still learning math. I am an
applied math major. In my free time I enjoy Tennis, board games, video
games, and youtube.

Peace Corps, in Gallup, and on St. Lawrence Island and White Mountain, Alaska before coming to Rio
Rancho. I'm married with three children and one grandchild. I enjoy the outdoors, especially hiking,

Claire Klumpenhower - NMSU-Grants |
Hi! My name is Claire Klumpenhower. I graduated from UNM in 1991 with
a B.S. in math education. I taught high school math for 7 years and
then, for the next 10 years, I left my teaching job to raise and home
school my two children. Last year I renewed my NM certification. I am
currently at NMSU-Grants working part-time as a math instructor for
Adult Ed and I am scheduled to teach a dev math class for the college
this fall. Although not formally in a classroom, my home schooling and
adult ed experiences have given me a better understanding of teaching.
Bottom line: I want to be the best math teacher that I can be. My
hobbies are singing and dancing to youtube videos, amateur
container/patio gardening, and reading biographies. I look forward to
meeting all of you!

Yuridia Leyva- University of New Mexico
|
Hello, fellow Summer Math Campers!!!
My name is Yuridia Leyva , and I recently graduated from the University of
New Mexico with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics, a B.A. in Chemistry, and a
minor in World Dance. I have loved math ever since my parents and I can
remember—math homework was always the first thing I did after getting home
from school. Ultimately, I wish to pursue a career in which I can apply
both my skills in mathematics as well as my interests in the health
sciences. My next step is graduate school, which I’m very excited about!
Aside from academics, I love to dance to practically anything, although my
favorites are Latin dance and ballroom dance. I also enjoy hiking, being
outdoors, and exercising (so if you need a work out buddy, do not hesitate
to let me know)! I look forward to meeting all of you!

Michael Nakamaye- University of New Mexico
|
I have exactly one photo on my computer so that is the only choice and it got put in here as an
attachment apparently instead of being visible. I have a long and very eclectic list of things that I
like: hippos, bicycling, fountain pens, coins, French literature, bel canto style opera, just about
any fresh fruit, of course mathematics but also teaching mathematics. As I look at my thermometer out
there I can add something I definitely do NOT like-- days over 100 degrees, or even over 95 degrees
for that matter. My formal studies were in French but the only job I've ever had is as math faculty,
at Harvard for five years and at UNM for 14. I hope that we have a great monsoon season, even if it
means riding my bike home in the rain every day after our meetings (though preferably not amidst too
much thunder and lightning). I am looking forward to making new acquaintances and also reconnecting
with old friends.

Kristin Umland- University of New Mexico
|
Hi All,
I've been in the Math department at UNM since 1996 and started working with Math teachers about 10
years ago. Right now I'm working a number of different projects, with Illustrative Mathematics being
the one that takes up the majority of my time. Since it is a resource we are going to use a lot in our
week together, you might want to check it out ahead of time:
http://www.illustrativemathematics.org/ [www.illustrativemathematics.org]
I've attached a photo of me from last summer in the jungle in Ecuador where I studied Spanish and
tromped around in the mud with my family. I'm looking forward to meeting/reconnecting with everyone!
