Nikhil Addleman- University of New Mexico |
Hello,
I am Nikhil Addleman. I am a pure math major here at UNM. I lived in
California until about three years ago when I decided that moving into the
desert seemed to me to be an exciting and novel change of scenery. My
mathematical interests include number theory and algebra on the pure side of
things. I like applied math as well, especially modeling with computer
algebra systems and procedural generation. Outside of school, I am a huge
fan of heavy metal music. My dream is to teach a course on the imaginary
field (academic field, not algebrai--never mind) of "metal studies" some
day!
I am excited to meet you all!

Hello everyone, my name is Marcello Codianni. I'm attending UNM for
Applied Mathematics, and I hope to go to grad school to apply
mathematics to neuroanatomy, which should be fun. I grew up on a small
farm about 100 miles south of Albuquerque, and one of the darkest
places on the continent, which was nice. In my spare time, I like to
fantasize about having spare time. Exciting stuff.
At any rate, I've been looking forward to this since it was announced,
doubly so since the summer semester began. I suppose I'll see all of
you there.

Luke Davis - Baylor University |
Greetings,
My name is Luke Davis. I am a general mathematics major, chemistry
minor currently attending Baylor University in Waco, Texas. I was
born and grew up in the Bronx, New York City and left for Texas to
learn new cultures and gain a different perspective on life.
Throughout my college years, my love for the mathematical field has
grown exponentially. Now, more than ever, I appreciate math's utility
in quantitative research and logical reasoning. After graduation, I
plan to further my mathematical background via graduate school in the
western United States and then delve into education and research.
In my free time, I love to hate the New York Yankees and New England
Patriots. So if your a fan of either team, please always position
yourself on the opposite side of the room from me at UNM. Otherwise,
we should get along well this July. When I'm not being sarcastic (as
I hope you noticed can sometimes be my tendency), I enjoy eating
healthy and working out on a regular basis.
I am certain we will all have an enjoyable time together this July and
look forward to all we will learn.

intimidated by math, but in college over time I developed
love for it and ended up even majoring in it. When I am not
doing math, I enjoy hiking, dancing, and archery. This summer,
I also picked up bongo drumming after receiving one for my
birthday in May. I look forward to visit UNM and meet everyone
at the camp.

Femke Onneweer - University of Kentucky |
Hi Everyone!
I'm a junior in Chemical Engineering at the University of Kentucky.
While I spend the school year in Kentucky, my home is in Phoenix,
Arizona. My hobbies outside of university are pretty varied. Recently
the big ones have been scuba and sewing.
I may have a slightly weaker back ground in mathematics compared to
most. I've almost come to an end in my required mathematics for UK's
courses in Engineering, but I feel there's still a lot to explore in
the field. I'm excited to learn a lot while at UNM!

Adrian Orozco - University of New Mexico |
Hello Everyone!
My name is Adrian Orozco, a native New Mexican and a recent graduate
with Bachelors' in Physics and Applied Mathematics from the University
of New Mexico. My interest in mathematics arose from my passion
for physics and my interest in physics arose from an introductory
physics course composed of many physics demonstrations, which was
a lot like black magic. During my senior year, while taking an
abstract algebra class, I gained an interest in pure mathematics,
which I learned first-hand is very different from applied mathematics.
The slow methodical thinking required for writing and
understanding mathematical proofs has helped me gain a greater
appreciation for all the remarkable mathematical theories that I
used to take for granted. Outside of school, I enjoy reading
(George Orwell and Joseph Heller are two of my favorite authors),
drawing, camping, hiking, fixing things, and most of all helping
my girlfriend's kids with their math homework. I am very excited
to attend this year's Summer Math Camp and getting to know all of you.

Linh Ward - University of New Mexico |
Hello, my Name is Linh Ward and I have been living in Grants, NM
since I came here from Vietnam. I originally wanted to be a teacher
for the junior grades in Vietnam and went to school for that,
receiving a two year degree, which is all that is necessary. When
I came to America I still had that dream but had to start over,
receiving a HS degree here at age 29, somewhat delayed from normal
Americans but it helped me adapt to English better. I just finished
my BS in Mathematics, and look forward to meeting everyone
at summer camp.

Hi,
My name is Erik Medina. I am a fourth-year PhD student here at UNM
studying under Dr. Alex Buium. My dissertation research lies in the area
of arithmetic geometry and involves trying to find, or prove the
nonexistence of, global functions of and lifts of Frobenius on
higher-order arithmetic jet spaces of curves. (If you?d like to learn
more, I?ll try to explain the theory of what I?m doing to the extent I?m
able. Alternatively, check out Dr. Buium?s introduction to research survey
on his website.)
In my free time, I love to play and watch soccer. I?m rooting for the
U.S.A., Mexico, and Brazil in the 2014 World Cup. I also enjoy listening
to music and playing chess. I look forward to meeting all of you at the

Hi. My name is Greg Morre. I am assisting with the MCTP summer program.
I am in the Phd program at UNM entering my fifth year. My advisor is
Janet Vassilev. My area of research is commutative algebra, more
specifically closure operations on commutative rings. Before I came to
UNM I lived in northern California. I really like games, board games,
card games whatever (except video games). I enjoy snowborading. I also
like to hike and camp but I have to say I haven't done much of that since
becoming a grad student. And I am almost always working on a crossword. I
also work for two pugs and a pretty demanding cat.

|
Deborah Sulsky- University of New Mexico |
Hello, everyone! Welcome to UNM! My name is Deborah Sulsky. I am a Professor at UNM and will be
working with Professor Helen Wearing and you during the third week of camp on modeling infectious
diseases. I've been at UNM since 1987 (wow!) and I work on numerical methods for solving problems in
mechanics and biology. I enjoy my weekend bicycle ride, playing racquetball, hiking, reading mystery
novels and traveling. I look forward to working with you and meeting you all in person.
P.S. I grew up in NY so be careful what you say about the Yankees, Luke!
(You can say whatever you
want about the Patriots - as long as it is not a compliment.)
|
|
Janet Vassilev- University of New Mexico
|
Hello!
This is Janet Vassilev, the resident commutative algebraist
in the math department here at UNM. The main focus
of my research these days is classifying closure
operations on commutative rings and determining the
underlying algebraic structure that certain sets of
closure operations satisfy.
I have been at UNM since 2008 and in addition
to my research I have been the co-director of the
UNM-PNM State Math Contest, which has been
a great opportunity to meet some of the strong
high school math students in the state.
In fact, this year we have two recent
participants.
Almost every summer I go to Bulgaria with my
husband and two daughters. While there, we
enjoy traveling around Bulgaria and to other
European countries. I love to sample the tasty
cuisine wherever we go. At home, I am the
pastry chef, making many tasty and savory
treats.
We are going to have a great time learning about
algebraic structures and closure operations through
some games
and group work. See you all
on July 2nd.

Helen Wearing- University of New Mexico |
Hi all,
Hope you're enjoying the camp so far!
I'm Helen Wearing and I've been on the faculty at UNM since 2007, with a joint appointment
in the departments of Mathematics & Statistics and Biology. In my research I use
mathematical models to understand the processes that affect population dynamics, with a
particular focus on the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases. Although you can
usually find me with pen and paper or behind a computer screen, I've been known to venture
into the lab and field (under close supervision) to collect data! I grew up in England, and
lived in France, Scotland and Georgia (USA) before moving to New Mexico. I enjoy being
outdoors, especially gardening and hiking in the beautiful Southwest.
Looking forward to meeting you all soon,
Helen
