Teresita Abalajon - Chinle High School, Apache County, Arizona
|
Hi everybody. My name is Teresita Javier Abalajon. You can call me Terry. I love Statistics when I was in high school and college. Unfortunately I forgot most of it … hopefully I will remember it during the training. I work at Chinle High School for the past two years. I was an adjunct faculty of NTU. This school year I will be teaching in Mojave High School in Las Vegas. I enjoyed being a part of the math training. This is the third time that I joined the summer math camp. Thank you Dr. Michael Nakamaye, Ms. Jennifer Wilson and Dr. Monika Nitsche for allowing me to be a participant.

Marie Barger - Our Lady of Assumption, Albuquerque
|
I am Marie Barger. I teach middle school math at Our Lady of Assumption. I have a
Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction from New Mexico State University. I hate
geometry and get headaches teaching it, so I hope this camp helps me learn ways of
being enthusiastic about geometry or at least the best way to fake it! I have 2
children 19 and 18. The 18 knows it all and will probably enter the military. My 19
year old is a student at New Mexico Tech. Take care and have a great weekend.
Have fun,Marie=)

Francesca Blueher
- Montezuma Elementary School, Albuquerque
|
Dear Math Camp Participants,
I am looking forward to our week together learning more about statistics!
A little about myself. I have been a teacher and Instructional Coach with
Albuquerque Public Schools for 17 years---all at the elementary level. A
passion for the beauty of math has developed during my career. I have delved
into Lesson Study which culminated in a trip to Japan where I got to immerse
myself in the art of teaching. I am on a personal/political leave from but
keep myself busy with teaching a couple of courses at UNM, am now in Las
Cruces working with NMSU in math professional learning, and am busy being an
activist in developing awareness about destructive school policies. My
greatest joy is sharing the joy of math to young children.
See you soon

Bonnie Dodge - Dreams Academy, Los Lunas, NM
|
I am a mathematics teacher at School of Dreams Academy in Los Lunas, NM.
I have also taught physical science, earth science, biology and geology.
I taught for 10 years in Connecticut, where I received my BA in education.
I currently have my Masters of Science for Teachers from NMT and I am Level
III certified in science and math.
I attended your 2014 summer camp and learned a lot. The problems we
tackled in summer camp I used in my pre-calculus class as class challenge
problems and I used the approaches we explored in my geometry classes.
I believe the students have learned many strategies which they can use when
approaching problems because I was able to present alternative solutions
and points of view. I hope to learn more this year and look forward to
brainstorming with others in the field to find new ways of approaching
teaching and learning for my students.

Luke Flores- University of New Mexico, Albuquerque
|
Hello everybody, my name is Luke Flores. I am an applied math major here at
UNM. I think the thing I most love about math is how logical and natural it is.
I plan on pursing a graduate degree in environmental engineering post
graduation. I love hiking, rollerblading along the Bosque, and reading fantasy
and sci-fi novels. This summer (when not at Math Camp) I hope to teach myself
how to program in Java for a fun little summer project. Looking forward to
meeting you all!

Marilou Acosta Joson
- University of New Mexico, Gallup
|
Hello everybody,
My name is Marilou Joson, I am currently working at UNM-Gallup as an adjunct faculty
in the Department of Arts and Sciences. I teach Developmental math classes for
traditional and non-traditional students in our campus. I like traveling, hiking

Joshua Kirtley
- Wilson Middle School, Albuquerque
|
My name is Josh Kirtley, and I am a new teacher
currently working at Wilson Middle School.
I am originally from San Antonio, TX, but have lived
in Albuquerque for the past 6 years. I am fond of many things:
biking, woodworking, metalworking, craftiness in general,
hiking, backpacking, general outdoorsiness, and much more…
I genuinely love mathematics, and spend much of my waking
time thinking about it. I only wish I had discovered how much
I liked math before I got a bachelor’s degree in foreign
languages, studying Spanish, Italian, French, Ancient Greek,
and Latin. I hope at some point in the not too distant future,
I can nab a PhD in pure math. I’m genuinely looking forward to
this UNM math shindig and working with y’all!
This was the only photo I could find with just me in it.
It was taken moments before I jumped off that active train bridge.

Will Knez - University of New Mexico, Albuquerque
|
My name is Will Knez and I am currently pursuing undergraduate degrees in both
Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at UNM. I have a powerful love of
computational geology and volcanology in particular. Outside of class I enjoy hiking,
gaming, programming, and salted caramel milkshakes. I'm looking forward to this camp
because a number of subjects we will cover (wavelets, modeling) are essential for
cross-discipline endeavors and those are the types of projects that I hope to
participate in someday.
I look forward to meeting you all.

Amanda Short - Montezuma Elementary, Albuquerque
|
My name is Amanda Short. I am originally from Iowa, where the humidity is high, fireflies fill the night sky, and the smell of pigs is everywhere. I love going home to visit the old life of butter churning, fresh sweet corn, and horse and buggy transportation. I have been an elementary school teacher for the past nine years and have lived in Albuquerque for the past ten. In my spare time I love to read fiction books (especially ones about princesses and enchanted places), go camping, and travel. I am always looking for an opportunity to visit new places and new cultures.
Over the years of bettering my teaching practice, I have come to realize the huge misunderstandings and misconceptions around teaching elementary school math (myself included in these misunderstandings and misconceptions). Through self-initiated professional development I have studied Japanese-Style Lesson Study in order to better my mathematical understanding and teaching abilities. This study has lead me to Japan where I was lucky enough to participate in multiple lessons at a variety of Japanese schools. Though Lesson Study I have come to love concepts that previously frightened me, like fractions and place value.
I look forward to getting to know everyone at Math Camp and deepening my mathematical understanding!

Emily Van Dyck - University of New Mexico, Albuquerque
|
Hello All!
I have recently gained an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education with
an endorsement in K-8 math. My classroom experience involves being a student
teacher in a seventh grade math classroom for the past school year. I enjoyed
the challenge of teaching at this level, as it was much different from the
preschool and kindergarten classes that I had previously taught. This past
year has revealed to me a passion for teaching math to middle schoolers that
I never knew I had (well I did know that I had a passion for math, but I
wasn't so sure about the middle schoolers). I am looking forward to preparing
for my own classroom this summer and learning loads from you guys at this
camp.

Michael Nakamaye- University of New Mexico, Albuquerque
|
Good morning,
I pursued a liberal arts education and then decided to do mathematics which I love.
When I got my first faculty position I realized that I enjoy teaching as much or
more than doing mathematics. Over the years, I have done less and less math and
invested more and more time working with students of all levels and, more recently,
with teachers. I am no longer going to be working full time here at UNM this fall
because the work with teachers is too important and takes a lot of time and focus. I
also direct the local Math Teachers' Circle in which many of the teachers in our
week are active participants.
A random list of some things I like:
(1) bicycling
(2) hippos
(3) Person of Interest
(4) making a mockery of all things-- myself first and foremost (otherwise none of
the rest is tenable), my colleague Kristin next, but also some our participants like
Francesca, Josh, and no doubt there will be others...
Looking forward to meeting you all soon!
--Mike
