Hello everybody, my name is Luke Flores. I am an applied math major here at
UNM. I think the thing I most love about math is how logical and natural it is.
I plan on pursing a graduate degree in environmental engineering post
graduation. I love hiking, rollerblading along the Bosque, and reading fantasy
and sci-fi novels. This summer (when not at Math Camp) I hope to teach myself
how to program in Java for a fun little summer project. Looking forward to
meeting you all!

Hey Everyone,
My name is Bryan Rubio, I'll be a Sophomore this upcoming fall semester
here at the University of New Mexico. I am majoring in Applied Mathematics and
Physics with aspirations to pursue a PhD so that one day I may be able to
conduct my own research. Outside of school most of my time is consumed by
Martial Arts (Shotokan Karate), Soccer, and Netflix. I have been studying
Shotokan Karate for 7 years, I've played on an adult Soccer team for 2 years
now, and of course life just can't be complete without Netflix. I'm excited to
spend part of my summer learning material that I am so passionate about. I look
forward to meeting everyone!

Justin Strawn- New Mexico State University |
My name is Justin Strawn. I am currently an Applied Mathematics major at
NMSU. I love the applied side of math but I am more passionate about the
theoretical side. As a result, I have continued the Applied Math degree but
have also completed the requirements for the Pure Math degree and then
some. Mathematics has been my passion since my first semester in college
and I couldn't see myself studying anything else. I plan on going to
graduate school, although, I have yet to decide where. I am really looking
forward to this summer camp as a tremendous opportunity to see further into
the applied side of mathematics before I have to decide on my post-grad
studies.

Dear All! My name is Jens Lorenz, Prof. of Applied
Math. I got my Ph.D. in Muenster, Germany, and came
to the US in 1983. After 7 years at Caltech, I joined
UNM in 1990. I work on problems in applied analysis,
mostly PDEs applied to physics. I am now the oldest
non-retired faculty member in our department, but just
learned this one: I'm not old, I'm chronologically
gifted.

Monika Nitsche- University of New Mexico
|
Hi Everybody, thanks to all for sending all of us your bio's!
I am Monika Nitsche. I've been a faculty member in
Applied Mathematics at the Math & Stats department at UNM since 1999.
I teach mostly applied math courses from calculus on up.
My research is in computational fluid dynamics, with emphasis on using and
finding numerical methods to better understand
vortex flows. Outside of teaching and vortices and meeting other mathematicians,
I love to swim (not surprisingly!),
hike, cook, play volleyball with Cristina!,
play pingpong (not lame!)
and spend time with my family.
In the picture I am the one on the right, together with a whole
bunch of other cool mathematicians at our department :)
Am very much looking forward to meet you all!

Cristina Pereyra- University of New Mexico
|
Dear all,
My name is Cristina Pereyra and I will be your teacher the first week of
your Summer Camp. I am a professor at UNM since 1996 (oh my gosh almost 20
years, aaahh!), and together with Professors Nitsche, Lorenz and Nakamaye
we have been running these camps since 2008. Prior to New Mexico I
received my BS (licenciatura) from the Universidad Central de Venezuela,
and came to the US to do my PhD at Yale University graduated in 1993
(ahhh more than 20 years ago) and was for 3 years at Princeton University
before coming to the Land of Enchantment (better check your license plate
motos!). I work in an area called Harmonic Analysis (which includes
Fourier and wavelet analysis the topics of our minicourse), I hope that
after enduring 5 days 6 hours a day of work you will get some idea of what
this is all about (some of you may already have an idea, good for you!). I
have two boys (10 and 14) that keep me quite busy. I run whenever I have a
chance, I like to play volleyball (hopefully we can organize some games
either indoors or in the sand courts near the dorms), love the mountains
and the desert (there are beautiful places to explore in New Mexico). The
picture shows me with 4 of my academic children, starting from the left
Oleksandra Beznosova who was a TA for MCTP back in 2008, Daewon Chung,
Jean Moraes (TA in 2010), David Weirich (current student you may meet him,
he was a participant in 2009 Summer camp right before joining UNM as a
graduate student, he was a TA in 2010), and last but not least myself! We
are all at Winnings my hiding spot, a coffee shop near campus, I love
their soy chai!! We can go some day for lunch!
