Arrival and lodging Information to take into account when traveling to Havana, Cuba

To attend the event, participants should consult with the Cuban embassy in their country; in order to enter Cuba with a valid passport, participants are advised to obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) document from the website www.dviajeros.mitrans.gob.cu/inicio by applying online ahead of their trip or process the entry with your travel agency. (Note that this form can only be fully completed 48 hours or sooner before entry into Cuba, but it is recommended to go through the form beforehand to see what questions need to be answered.)

A commercial service for obtaining a Cuban tourist card that has been used by one of the organizers is www.easy.touristcard.com.

The airport taxis (yellow cabs) are perfectly safe. The transfer from the airport to Vedado costs around 25USD and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Don't change all your money at the airport, just an appropriate sum for the first days. The change outside banking institutions is more favorable for the traveler, but you must be careful because you may be the victim of a scam.

The University of Havana is located in Vedado, so try to find your accommodation in a hotel in this area (Habana Libre, Capri, Nacional, Vedado, Victoria, etc.).

You can also organize your accommodation through Airbnb: there are many home families that rent rooms located nearby and are safe. The price of the room is around 25 USD per night and they offer single and double rooms. In this area of Vedado the streets are named with letters and odd numbers. So a good location within walking distance of the University will be between the letters D to P and the numbers 17 to 29.

The University has two entrances: the main one on L street (the university stairs) and another on the corner of street J and street 29, that the participants should use. This secondary access is indicated on the map with a red arrow. The activities of the Conference inside the university campus will be in the Varona Building (9) and the Aula Magna (10). In the Varona Building we will have free Wi-Fi.

For breakfast options, you can have snacks at the nearby cafeterias or at the Hotel Habana Libre (around 5.00 USD for an American breakfast). The area is full of restaurants and cafes.

Due to the current economic crisis, urban transport is very scarce, so it is better to move in state or private taxis.

To buy a temporal SIM card (CubacelTur) and have internet all the time, you can visit the site: www.cubaceltur.com or www.suenacuba.com.

Due to heat, it is important that we all stay hydrated and for this reason we recommend that you do not leave the hotel without taking drinking water with you. To avoid any stomach illness, you should drink only safe water.
