Event Description:

Title: The multispecies coalescent: networks, treespace, and traits.

Abstract: In this talk, I discuss the multispecies coalescent, a widely used model in evolutionary biology, and discuss how it is used to model evolutionary trees, in particular the relationship between gene trees, which describe ancestry of genes, and species trees and networks, which describe ancestry at the species level. I will discuss visualizing trees in treespace, using probability to infer species-level trees and networks from gene trees, and modeling trait evolution on multiple gene trees.
