Event Description:

Title: Mathematical Aspects of Electro-diffusion and Applications to Maintenance of the Gastric Mucus Layer

Abstract: Transport of charged ionic species is a ubiquitous phenomenon throughout physiology. In many contexts, the appropriate model to describe the transport of these species is the electroneutral Nernst-Planck equations. Motivated by questions pertaining to maintenance of healthy gastric physiology, this talk will show how models built on the electroneutral Nernst-Planck equations can be used to answer pressing questions which are difficult to address experimentally. We will touch on some of the mathematical and numerical challenges associated with the use of such models, and discuss the implication that solutions have for gastric physiology.

There will coffee, tea and cookies in the department lounge from 3:00 to 3:30.

About the Speaker Owen Lewis is an Assistant Professor in our department.

Zoom option:  I set up a zoom meeting for this so those not in Albuquerque can attend.   It is set to only allow unm accounts to join.  I can add another univeristy domain to the allowed list if someone needs this.  --Terry
