UNM Mathematics and Statistics Associate Professor Mohammad Motamed is co-leading two federal grants totaling $500,000 to advance quantum computing by developing quantum digital twins—tools that emulate quantum computers. The project aims to overcome challenges in quantum computing, particularly uncertainties caused by environmental noise and the scalability of systems as they expand with more qubits. Collaborating with Sandia National Labs, Lawrence Livermore National Labs, and Virginia Tech, the team seeks to enhance the reliability and scalability of quantum computations, paving the way for quantum advantage. The research also supports the training of future scientists, with two PhD students at UNM involved in the project. Motamed envisions these efforts fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and accelerating progress in quantum technology applications like cryptography and materials science.
