Please join us in welcoming Owen Lewis, Junqing Qian and Gleb Zhelezov.
Owen Lewis, PhD, Assistant Professor
Owen is an applied mathematician and received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of California Davis where he worked under Dr. Robert Guy. His research interests lie at the intersection of mathematics, biology, and physics. He feels strongly that mathematics and mathematical thinking are integral components of STEM education. Junqing (Jenn) Qian, PhD, Visiting Professor
Junqing (Jenn) was born and raised in Beijing, China. At an early age, she was trained as a classical pianist. She went to the University of Science and Technology of China for her undergraduate study in Mathematics. After her bachelor's degree, she attended the University of Connecticut to pursue a Ph.D. in Pure Math under the advisement of Prof. Damin Wu. At UNM, she is excited to work with Prof. Alex Buium and Prof. Hongnian Huang and to be part of the UNM math community. Her research focuses on geometry. More precisely, she is interested in discovering connections between differential geometry and arithmetic algebraic approaches. Jenn also deeply cares about her students and their well-being. She has a cute 2-year-old Coton de Tulear named Puffy. You may see her walking with Puffy around campus from time to time.
Gleb Zhelezov, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow
Gleb is originally from Belarus but spent a large part of his childhood in Israel and the US. After completing high school in the historic town of Polotsk (first written record: 862!), he went to the US to attend Texas A&M University, and then did a PhD at the University of Arizona. Most recently, he was a postdoc at the University of Edinburgh. Gleb is interested in applications of probability and statistics in biological and physical systems. He has been involved in math outreach since undergrad, and is excited to co-organize the UNM-PNM math contest this year with Prof. Zeb Chaudhry. In his free time, he likes to hike and backpack, and tinker with computers--but not at the same time.
