Two UNM  PhD 2008 graduates, Jessica Deshler and Ralph Gomez, were featured in the 2020 Lathisms Calendar.

Dr, Jessica Deshler received her PhD in mathematics under the supervision of  Kristin Umland in 2008. Jessica is now Professor of Mathematics, and Graduate Program Director at West Virginia University, where she is only the third woman, and is the first Hispanic faculty member to be fully promoted. She spent 2015-2016 as a US Fulbright Scholar in Hungary, where she provided professional development to international doctoral students.
Jessica's passions for mathematics and teaching led her to change her research path from applied mathematics and fluid dynamics to the field of undergraduate mathematics education during her doctoral program. Since that time, she has established herself as a leader in the field, especially in the area of graduate student professional growth. 

Dr. Ralph Gomez Ralph received his  PhD in mathematics under the supervision of  Charles P. Boyer in 2008. Ralph finished his degree in five-and-a-half years and accepted a visiting professorship at Swarthmore College in 2008. Ralph is now an associate professor of mathematics and statistics at Swarthmore College. Ralph’s main area of research is understanding geometric structures on manifolds. One strand of his research involves using Sasakian geometry to show the existence of Einstein metrics on certain odd dimensional manifolds.
