Event Description:
Title: The inverse water wave bathymetry problem
Abstract. The Euler water wave equations describe the motion of a free surface bounding an inviscid, irrotational incompressible fluid. Within the context of the Euler water wave problem, I will discuss a method to use surface measurements to reconstruct the bottom bathymetry. I will illustrate the method with numerical bathymetry reconstructions beneath a one-dimensional surface. The method applies equally well to two-dimensional water waves, but the computational cost is, for the moment, prohibitive in that setting. This is joint work with Vishal Vasan.
