Applied Math Seminar (Becca Thomases)
Event Description:
Speaker: Becca Thomases, UC Davis
Title: Mathematical and computational challenges in complex fluids
Abstract: Complex fluids, or non-Newtonian fluids, present interesting challenges and phenomena not present in classical viscous fluids. I will describe some of these from a mathematical perspective and some techniques we have developed to understand them. This talk will focus on the low Reynolds number regime where inertia is negligible. Problems in this regime have interesting applications in engineering (such as designing micro-mixers) and biology (for example when trying to understand how micro-organisms move in mucus).
