UNM-PNM Statewide Mathematics Contest Public Lecture: Stefan Steinerberger (University of Washington)
Event Description:
Title: "Simple things that we don't know."
Abstract: People have been doing mathematics for thousands of years! There are now some things that we understand pretty well. We can compute trajectories of rockets pretty accurately and we are also decent when it comes to adding numbers. But there's also many, many things, some of them very easy and simple to explain, that we know very little about. This is great because it gives mathematics the chance to grow, it shows what we need to understand better. We will discuss some of these very simple things that we know nothing about.
About the Speaker: Stefan Steinerberger is Associate Professor at the University of Washington. He earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, Austria, and a Ph.D. from Universität Bonn in Germany. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Bonn, and then both a Gibbs Instructor and an Assistant Professor at Yale University. Among his awards and recognitions, Professor Steinerberger was a 2018 Alfred P. Sloan fellow. His research in analysis has been supported by the National Science Foundation. He likes questions combining PDEs, Spectral Theory, and Harmonic Analysis.
